I use these on the shop truck for when I'm doing deliveries or taking my own kayaks out for a paddle. I like that they bolt to something under the hood, in my case fender bolts. Where you attach them depends on the car, but my recommendation is to use something metal and NOT anything plastic as plastic will not be load bearing enough to use for this application.

They are always in place and tuck away when I don't need them but when I do, I just open up the hood, pulled them out and I am good to go!
